PBC is reportedly wanting Canelo Alvarez to fight Jaime Munguia on Cinco de Mayo Weekend.
Alvarez has not fought since beating Jermell Charlo last year by a unanimous decision. The fight was criticised given the one-sided nature since Charlo was moving up two weight classes from 154 pounds to try and win Canelo’s undisputed title at 168.
The bout failed to show Canelo’s true form, given that he was not fighting a fully-fledged super middleweight. After the victory, the calls on Canelo to fight David Benavidez increased. The Mexican Monster is the current WBC Super Middleweight Interim Champion after having stopped Demetrius Andrade in his last fight. Although the mandatory is due to be called in March, there is nothing to indicate that Canelo will fight Benavidez soon.
The initial reports linked Canelo with Jermall Charlo, followed by Terence Crawford. Charlo backtracked on his comments after he initially stated that he would be fighting Canelo. Alvarez then ruled out a fight with Crawford, saying he would get no credit for getting a win. But given that Canelo said he would fight an American, that has left fans wondering who the next opponent is.
Canelo allegedly wants a guaranteed purse of $35 million, which is the reason why his fight is currently being held up. That has left the narrative in place for Canelo to fight Munguia to secure that purse. Munguia is a fellow Mexican and that fight would sell on Cinco de Mayo weekend. But to secure the fight, there would have to be a deal with DAZN, given that Munguia is with Golden Boy Promotions. That has left Canelo’s next fight uncertain.
This naturally begs the question where does Canelo go next? The Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion could go back to DAZN and request to fight Charlo, given that he had fought on the platform previously. He currently has two fights left on his PBC deal, but if the network cannot guarantee him the funds that he wants, then he may have no choice but to leave.
PBC’s current future is a little uncertain given that Showtime had exited the sport last year. Although they have signed a deal with Amazon Prime Video, the network has allegedly not provided them with a budget, leaving PBC with no choice but to put up the funds. And given that they had generated such huge live gates with Showtime last year, three of which exceeded 20 million, Canelo will be looking for a similar amount.
If PBC were to lose Alvarez, it would damage their credibility given that they have just signed their multi-year deal with Amazon Prime Video. In addition, Gervonta Davis is also not currently scheduled to fight. This is not ideal since Tank Davis has been flirting with other promoters. He had been in discussions with Eddie Hearn about fighting Connor Benn. Although the fight broke down, it does show that PBC fighters are looking elsewhere. Boxing expert Rick Glaser backed up those comments.

If 35 million people come up with one dollar each for PBC, Canelo can get his guarantee escrowed, & #Canelo would be fighting #JermallCharlo on May 4. Or even easier, #Floyd #Mayweather could front his dear friend #AlHaymon that 35 million. That's suppose to be chump change for…

The PBC fighters that are smart are abandoning the sinking ship known as #PBC. Other promoters are getting calls daily from fighters attempting to leave the PBC & find a Promoter that wants them, but these fighters are facing resistance from other promoters, citing fighter's…
